I love the detail you manage to put in such a small design
The way I color hair is the same concept, whether big or small. The difficulty is that you have to define the hair much more than you would on hair that's on a scale like the one I show here. So you need a really good sketch telling you where to go, or you have a good idea in your head about where the major locks of hair are. (:

For the hair on this one, sketching doesn't work because the locks of hair went in every single direction. orz SO, what I did for the hair was I slapped down different colored blocks to represent the hair - how big the locks were and in what direction. And then from there, I refined the shapes until I got a result I like and theeen did the fine tuning, like shadows and highlights. (:

This one is curly hair, so I don't know if you can apply what I did buttt...it's worth a shot? Lol.
I still did the sketch -> fill in the hair shape. But I drew each lock of hair starting from (not very apparent in the picture, because the dude's chin covers it) where the hair parts. And focused only on REALLY deep shadows.
This might work if the color of the hair is DARK.
I'm not sure if this can help you help me in any way, orz ^^' Gomen gomen, but yeah I'm having a heap of trouble with it //ohgodwhy? Hah but you've helped a bit so far! <3
